"The sculpture cohort was small enough that Tomás could give individual feedback every session." — Roisín M., Cork
Every programme at Art Course Central follows a three-phase structure designed to move students from guided technique into independent creative practice. We do not teach formulas — we build visual thinking.
Phase 1: Observation & Technique — Weeks 1–3 focus on material handling, colour theory fundamentals, and observational exercises specific to the medium.
Phase 2: Guided Projects — Weeks 4–6 introduce structured assignments with increasing creative latitude. Peer critique sessions begin here.
Phase 3: Independent Studio — Remaining weeks are dedicated to self-directed work with instructor mentoring, culminating in a portfolio review or group exhibition.
Before any creative ambition can be realised, students need to understand their tools. Each course begins with intensive material workshops — learning the grain of charcoal, the viscosity of oil, the behaviour of wet clay. This is not busywork; it is the foundation of confidence.
We cap every programme at 16 students maximum. Most run between 10 and 14. This is deliberate: every student receives individual critique at least twice per session. Group discussions are structured, not freeform, to ensure productive dialogue.
Longer programmes conclude with a curated group showing in our gallery corridor. This is not ceremonial — it teaches students to present, frame, and contextualise their work for an audience. Several past participants have gone on to exhibit independently in regional galleries.
Lead Instructor — Oil Painting, Life Drawing
Ciarán studied at NCAD and has exhibited across Ireland and the UK. He has taught studio painting for eleven years, with a particular focus on tonal composition and alla prima technique.
Drawing & Foundations
Niamh's practice centres on large-scale charcoal work and anatomical drawing. She brings a rigorous, observational approach that grounds students in the fundamentals before moving to expressive work.
Digital Illustration
Aoife works as both a freelance illustrator and educator. Her Saturday lab introduces students to Procreate and Photoshop workflows, with emphasis on translating traditional drawing skills into digital environments.
No. Our Foundations-level programmes (Charcoal & Graphite, Watercolour Landscapes) assume no prior training. The schedule table above notes which courses require prerequisites.
Basic materials — paper, charcoal sticks, introductory paint sets — are provided for the first two sessions. After that, students purchase their own supplies. We provide a recommended list and negotiate group discounts with a local supplier.
Transfers are possible within the first two weeks if space is available in the target cohort. After week two, we recommend completing the current programme and enrolling in the next term.
There is a small car park behind the building with space for approximately 15 vehicles. Street parking on Kerluke Course is also available and typically unrestricted during class hours.

"The mixed media course was genuinely experimental. Sinéad encouraged us to fail fast and learn from the mess. I produced work I never thought I was capable of."
— Aisling D., Galway
"I enrolled in the digital illustration lab as a traditional painter. Aoife made the transition intuitive — I now use both workflows in my freelance practice."
— Conor T., Dublin
"Small class sizes made all the difference. In my previous course elsewhere, I barely got feedback. Here, Ciarán reviewed my palette work every single session."
— Fionnuala O., Limerick
